On Tuesday, March 16, at 11 AM, several Arizona Region Five Choir Boys met with Maria De Jesus Meza Martinez, Agent Garcia’s mother, at her home in Nogales, AZ. Other family members present included Agent Garcia’s sister and a sister-in-law and two Custom and Border Protection (CBP) agents. Mrs. Martinez was very appreciative.
As you recall, this journey began on Friday, May 5, at approximately 5 PM. Earlier that day, CBP Special Agent Edgard Garcia traveled to Tucson, Arizona to testify in federal court. After his testimony, Agent Garcia headed home to Nogales, Arizona. He took Interstate 19 and somewhere near Rio Rico, he crossed the center median, northbound lanes, and struck a tree on the opposite side of the interstate.
Arizona DPS responded to the scene. When they arrived, they found Agent Garcia still in his seatbelt in his car. DPS has not determined the cause of the crash. CBP considers this on on-duty death. Agent Garcia, 41 years old, worked out of the CBP station in Nogales and was a 13 year veteran of the agency.
On Monday, May 8th, Arizona Governor Doug Ducey ordered flags around Arizona to be lowered to half-staff in honor of Agent Garcia.
My thanks to Geno Mendoza, Blaise Romero, Kevin Pendergraft, Bill Young, and Matt Roth (photo below), for making the ride to Nogales and making the presentation. A special thanks to Geno for setting the donation up with Agent Garcia’s family and with Customs and Border Protection.
